Jeremy Renner Signing as Hawkeye for The Avengers?
According to Heat Vision and AICN, Jeremy Renner (The Hurt Locker) is nearing a deal to join Marvel's Avengers movie due in 2012. Heat Vision hasn't cited a source but AICN claims "a first time source with a very interesting connection to all of this". All very shady and Marvel itself hasn't made any comment. Renner's involvement was initially reported last November but then denied by Renner in December as an idea that was "blown out of proportion". Renner's spoken at length about the possibility of Hawkeye's live-action interpretation and reportedly hinted at a costume more like the Ultimates version with sunglasses and a vest (a lot like Smallville's Green Arrow). Screen Rant also quotes Renner as saying, "If I was a betting man, I would bet that Hawkeye would probably show up in Thor, and then be in The Avengers…" Thor has actually just wrapped principle photography but Marvel's penchant for post-credits teasers could mean there's still time before Thor's 2011 release. S.H.I.E.L.D.'s role has also been developed from the Incredible Hulk to Iron Man 2 and a S.H.I.E.L.D. film is apparently on the way after The Avengers. This is significant because it means there is definitely scope for more S.H.I.E.L.D. characters and, in the Ultimates Marvel universe, Hawkeye is Black Widow's S.H.I.E.L.D. partner.
What makes Hawkeye a great character:
Instead of superhuman powers, Clint Barton (a.k.a. Hawkeye) has extremely developed skill with a bow and arrow but he is nothing like Robin Hood. Hawkeye started as a villain and, in most versions, actually broke into the Avengers headquarters to ask if he could join. In the Ultimates version, Hawkeye is an agent of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s black ops division and partners with Black Widow. His arrows aren't rubber-tipped either. Hawkeye is a deadly assassin. Integrating this into a 12A movie universe would certainly add to all the other challenges involved in the development of the Avengers. Despite his professional ruthlessness and globe-spanning profession, Barton managed to build a relatively stable family-life with his girlfriend/wife, Laura, and three children. Before going on every mission, Hawkeye habitually phoned his family to say good-bye just in case he never returned. This is the kind of depth of characterisation that makes Marvel's heroes great and so ready for film.
